
The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks have a rare Monday conference doubleheader tonight when they welcome the West Branch Bears to Wellman. This pair of games was originally scheduled for January 10th, but Mother Nature moved them back by a week and a half. The Golden Hawk girls come into the game after a 39-33 loss to West Liberty on the road where Myah Lugar led the way with 16 points including four made three pointers. On the season, the Hawks are led by Maddie Nonnenmann scoring 12 points per game. Lugar is the team leader on the glass with 62 boards,. Amara Jones paces the Hawks with 47 steals and 41 assists.
West Branch comes into the game with an overall record of 11-2. The Bears are ranked No. 6 in class 2A in the latest poll from the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. Last time out they won at Durant 51-28 behind 17 points from Sasha Koenig. On the season, Koenig is averaging a team best 16 points per game. She also has a team best 79 assists, second most in the state in 2A and Kaiya Luneckas leads the Bears with 132 rebounds, fifth most in class 2A. The Bears swept the Golden Hawks a season ago 52-46 at West Branch and 49-40 in Wellman.
The Golden Hawk boys come into tonight’s action with an overall record of 3-7 after a 64-35 rout of West Liberty on the road Thursday. In the game, Mid-Prairie had nine players scoring including a game high 16 from Carter Harmsen. On the year, the Hawks are led by Harmsen at 13 points per game. Brad Tornow has the team lead with 49 assists and Aidan Rath has a team best 68 rebounds.
West Branch is 10-1 this year. They beat Durant on the road Friday 65-49 behind Matt Whaley’s 18 points. On the year the Bears are led by Jeff Bowie at 14 points per game. He is also the team’s leader on the boards with 67 total rebounds. Whaley leads the Bears with 38 assists. West Branch swept the Hawks in both games a season ago 63-60 at West Branch and 74-62 in Wellman.
