The 2020 Iowa Legislative session has been underway for a week now and with this comes the creation of bills and laws both parties want to see made official. Republican Representative Joe Mitchell from Wayland, spoke to KCII News about the bills he would like his party to pursue during the session. The biggest issues he sees his community pushing for are workforce and child care, “How do we keep, attract, and entertain people, specifically to our rural communities? Right now our businesses, you know, there’s not enough warm bodies to build a job. One of the biggest things we will be working on is how do we get people to the state that want to build a job especially in our rural areas that have a declining population. And number two, is child care. If you talk to anybody that has young children, a lot of them have had a lot of hard times getting their kids to a daycare or child care centers. So we’re working on expanding the tax credit for parents who can benefit off of that. We’ve got ways that we can subsidize daycare centers to be able to create more within our rural areas, creating more access to child care.” Mitchell was set to answer questions and hear concerns from citizens in Washington County this past weekend in a legislative briefing, but it was cancelled due to weather. The next briefing is scheduled for February 15th.
