For just the second year the Girls State Wrestling Tournament is returning and will be held in Waverly. Unlike the Boys State Wrestling Tournament, the girls tournament is not hosted by a governing body, instead by the Iowa Coaches and Officials Association. The qualifications to enter the tournament are simple; any girl who is eligible to wrestle in their weight class can wrestle for a state title. The competition has seen exponential growth since last year. This year’s tournament will see 380 girls competing between two days, Friday and Saturday. Mid-Prairie head coach Justin Garvey tells KCII news which of his wrestlers will compete at the tournament, “We’ll be taking veteran wrestler Rylee Vercande at 120 pounds. She’s a returning place winner from last year at that tournament. So (she’s) looking to make another step up the realm on the podium for her. Also at 120 pounds we’ll be taking Mia Garvey, kind of her first season wrestling the entire season. At 138 pounds we’ll be taking Caitlyn Busch, another newcomer to our wrestling team. At 145 pounds we’ll be taking Madison Kelly. And then at 152 pounds we’ll be taking Sarah Meader. So we’re going to take all our girls up and give them the experience of wrestling in the second ever girls state wrestling tournament. And I know they are really excited about it.” Friday will begin with weigh-ins starting at 2 p.m., with matches starting at 4 p.m. The tournament holders are looking to finish Friday’s matches at 10:30 p.m. and make it to the Quarterfinals. Saturday will continue at 8:30 a.m. and finish by 11 a.m.
