Iowa is 14th in the nation for community water fluoridation. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released their biennial water fluoridation statistics with the most recent data from 2016. Over two million Iowans receive fluoridated water. The Iowa Department of Public Health and over 100 national and international organizations, including the American Cancer Society, the World Health Organization, and the American Medical Society, support the practice of community water fluoridation. Fluoridation of water helps prevent tooth decay. In October, 107 Iowa communities received the Water Fluoridation Quality Award from the CDC. The only city in Washington County on that list was Kalona, which received the 50 Year Award. Area cities on that list included Iowa City, Lone Tree, and Wapello.
