One of the best teams in Golden Hawk boys basketball history will be recognized Tuesday when this year’s Mid-Prairie boys team hosts Durant. The 1970 Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks will be in the spotlight on Tuesday. That team was the first team in Mid-Prairie history to reach the state tournament. They finished as runners-up in 1970, beating Manson 71-57 in the opening round, LaPorte City 91-73 in the semifinals before falling to Paulina 78-70 in the championship game. Standouts on the team included forward Steve Mast and guard Don Showalter who were selected as all-state players. Showalter went on to have an illustrious coaching career at his alma-mater, posting more than 400 victories at Mid-Prairie and over 600 total in Iowa. He also led the Hawks back to the state championship game in 2007. Members of the team will be honored at halftime against Durant and will hold a reception later that night at the Hard Luck Cafe in Kalona.
