The chance to punch a ticket to Wells Fargo Arena is today for Iowa High School wrestlers and Washington is the location for a class 2A district.
The Demons have five wrestlers competing on their home mat after cracking the top two in last week’s sectional at Fairfield. Justin Simmering at 138 lbs and Brayden Hartman at 285 lbs advanced after capturing a sectional title. Other Demons competing include Jack Kleese at 106 lbs, Brandon Dickel at 126 lbs, and Ayden Frazer at 160 lbs. Head Coach Brent Van Weelden is excited for the day ahead. “Being in our own gym is a blessing. It will be packed and a great atmosphere for wrestling. It will be go-time right from the beginning with semi-finals in the first round and we expect a lot of great matches.”
Columbus Community/WMU is another area team that will be competing and the Wildcats have four wrestlers that made the cut. Lane Scorpil is undefeated at 106 lbs and won a sectional title at Davenport Assumption along with Chance Malone at 195 lbs. Noah Freeman at 170 lbs and Seth Schurr at 285 lbs round out the Wildcat competitors. The top two individuals from each weight class will advance to next week’s state tournament in Des Moines.
All of the action begins at noon today in Washington.
