The chance to take one step closer to state continues today for the Sigourney girls’ basketball team when they host English Valleys for a class 1A regional quarterfinal.
The Savages are riding high with a 17-4 record and winning 11 of their last 12 games. They advanced after handling Keota 64-13 on Thursday on the strength of Megan Stuhr’s 32 points. The senior paces the team with 21 points a night and Kaylee Weber hauls in seven rebounds a game. English Valleys is 13-8 and they defeated Tri-County 49-23 in the first round with Carly Stanerson and Cheyenne Conrad combining for 23 points. Sigourney took care of business in two regular season meetings with the Bears winning the first 58-26, but last month they squeaked out of a dogfight with a 43-39 victory. Head Coach Zach Tremmel tells KCII Sports the Bears are gunning for them. “I know they gained a lot of confidence in the last game we played them. We need to come out and show them we are the better team. Apply a lot of defensive pressure and stay out of foul trouble and I think we will be alright.”
The winner of tonight’s contest will face either Springville or Iowa Valley on Friday. The playoff action begins at 7 p.m. in Sigourney. Listen to the entire Savage girls postseason run on FM 106.1 KCII.
