A House Study Bill has been created in order to ban conversion therapy for minors in Iowa. Representative Bobby Kaufman introduced House Study Bill 698, banning conversion therapy aiming to change the sexual orientation or gender identity of an individual. Representative Joe Mitchell sits on the State Government committee and supports the measure. He talked about the bill at the latest Washington County Legislative Breifing, “Me and representative Bobby Kaufman from Cedar County, he’s the chairman of the State Government Committee, we’re going to be holding a sub-committee to ban some conversion therapy type practices.” Any health care professional in violation of this bill would be subject to disciplinary action. According to the Human Rights Campaign, 19 states protect LGBTQ youth from conversion therapy.
