It was a memorable night in Sigourney on Tuesday in a class 1A quarterfinal regional girls basketball game. There was a mix of individual and team accomplishments in their final home game of the season and most importantly the Savages are moving on in the playoffs after a 61-23 victory over English Valleys.

As heard on KCII, the Savages wasted no time jumping on the Bears with a 9-1 run to start the game and 21-8 advantage after the first eight minutes on the strength of their full court pressure. Sigourney was up 31-15 at half and gave English Valleys no hope out of the break with a 13-0 run to put the game out of reach. With two minutes left, Megan Stuhr put the cherry on top of the night sinking a free throw to eclipse 1,000 points for her career. That was the senior’s 25th point of the evening and her final playing inside the Sigourney High School gym. Head Coach Zach Tremmel tells KCII Sports you could not write a better script. “Once this game got out of reach I was going to make sure she got 1,000 points on this floor. She should be proud. She has been a four-year starter for us and has steadily developed her offensive game. Megan is going to be missed next year.” Makenna Hammes had a big second half to finish with 16 points and Kaylee Weber added eight.

The Savages improve to 18-4 and they advance to the regional semifinal round Friday at Iowa City High to play Springville in a game that can be heard on KCII. The 19-4 Orioles defeated Iowa Valley 62-33 last night.
