After splitting their two regular season meetings, the Winfield-Mt. Union boys’ basketball team captured the rubber match against Columbus Community winning in the first round of a class 1A district by a final tally of 54-39.
It was a tight one for a while, with the Wolves up 11-8 after one and 20-15 at the half. WMU got some separation in the third outscoring the Wildcats 22-12 and they held serve the rest of the way for the 15-point victory. Daunte Oepping was not going to let his prep career end, as he busted out for 19 points on eight of 10 shooting and hauled in 11 rebounds. Christian Gerot chipped in with 13 points including three triples for the victorious home team. Bawi UK paced Columbus with 11 points with three field goals behind the arc.
The Wolves improve to 7-15 and advance to the district quarterfinal tomorrow when they travel to Wayland to play WACO. The Wildcats close the season 3-19 and say goodbye to seniors Jonathan Gonzalez, Gustavo Anaya, Evan Rees, Jaime Villegas, and Eric Valdez.
