It was a busy first day for KCII area wrestlers at the Iowa High School State Wresting Tournament in Des Moines and seven of 10 moved on to Friday.

Four area competitors advanced to the quarterfinals after winning their first match. In Class 2A Lane Scorpil of Columbus Community/WMU took care of business with an 11-0 major decision at 106 lbs and Mid-Prairie’s Isaac Boucher had a pin at 195 lbs in 5:39. In Class 1A Highland’s Bryce Thompson won in exciting fashion by a 7-5 sudden victory at 106 lbs and Sigourney-Keota’s Mason Dye won by a 14-6 major at 126 lbs.

Three individuals will try to climb the ladder in the consolation bracket on Friday after going 1-1. Jalen Collins of WACO was pinned in his first match, but stayed alive with a wild 12-11 decision in match number two at 132 lbs. Fellow senior teammate Jaden Williams was also pinned in the first round, but won by an 8-4 decision in the second at 152 lbs. Also in that bracket is Sigourney-Keota’s Jack Clarahan and he lost by an 18-4 major and then won by an 8-6 decision.

Three individuals saw their tournament come to a close including Washington’s Brayden Hartman. The freshman lost by a pair of falls at 285 lbs. WACO’s Jonah Clark was pinned and had a 9-3 decision loss at 145 lbs. In his first state appearance, Highland senior Cael Yeggy lost by fall and a 16-6 major decision at 182 lbs.

The class 2A quarterfinals get started at 9 a.m. this morning, Class 1A quarterfinals will get underway at 2:30 p.m., and the 1A and 2A semifinals will be tonight starting at 7:30 p.m. Listen to KCII throughout the day for updates and follow along online at kciiradio.com.
