The season came to an abrupt end on Friday night for the Sigourney girls’ basketball team, as they ran into a buzz saw that is Springville and fell 63-43 in a class 1A regional semifinal game.
As heard on KCII, the Orioles were the aggressor from the start, jumping out to a 15-3 lead after one and 29-9 advantage at half. Sigourney foul trouble, Springville defenders attached at the hip to Megan Stuhr, and efficient Oriole offense all contributed to the lopsided first 16 minutes. The Savages would not go down without a fight scoring the first four points of the third and started to get some rhythm offensively. They couldn’t get enough stops at the other end however, and the deficit never got below 16. Head Coach Zach Tremmel tells KCII Sports they could never get their feet under them. “We preached all week how this team plays a different brand of basketball than what we see in our conference. They are really aggressive and cut harder than anyone we have seen. It is hard to emulate in practice and major credit to them they punched us in the mouth early. We didn’t match them physically and it is tough to crawl out of a hole against a team like this.” Stuhr capped off her senior campaign with 17 points to make 1,017 in her career. Kaylee Weber added 12 points and senior Makenna Hammes had six before fouling out late in the third. Springville had balanced scoring with four players in double figures led by Lauren Wilson with 18.
They improve to 20-4 and they advance to the regional final to play Montezuma. Sigourney concludes the season 18-5 and say goodbye to Stuhr and Hammes.
