The City of Kalona and the Communications Network, Inc.  are continuing efforts to fix the Kalona Bakery building. A fire in 2016 severely damaged the building and it has remained vacant ever since. In 2019, the City and Communications Network, Inc., a division of KCTC, bought the space for $18,000 each and are working to fix the damage the fire caused. City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh tells KCII News what the next step is to repair the building, “April 21st is when we look to be able to have some clarification from the State on a $100,000 rehabilitation grant that we’re in the second phase of our request. We’ve been pushed from phase one to phase two and we’re hopeful we’ll hear by then, and we can hopefully get some of the process started to structurally get the building in a condition that it’s a little more attractive for people to come in and take a look at structurally.” The grant in question is the Community Catalyst Building Remediation grant through Iowa Economic Development. Bids to purchase the space will be accepted once all the repairs are complete.
