After 27 years of service, one fire department volunteer will hang up his gear for the last time. Columbus Junction Police Chief Donnie Orr, better known as Poppy in the fire hall, announced his retirement from the fire department at last Monday’s fire department meeting. Orr tells KCII News one of his favorite moments from being part of the fire department, “I would have to say that my son is still currently on the fire department and he’s been a cadet for three or four years and then he became a full time fireman just in November, I believe. Being on the department with him was probably the highlight for sure.” Orr also says the community’s positive outreach has been strange, but appreciated. Orr continues to be part of the police department as it’s chief, but says it was time to retire from the fire department to have a bit more time for family and himself.
