For some kids, eating at school is the only food they will have all day, and Tyson Foods is making sure they go home full. Last month, The Food Bank of Iowa received a $30,000 donation from Tyson Foods in order to fund their BackPack Program, which sends home a box of kid-friendly snacks to 5,000 kids around the state. Food Bank of Iowa Senior Manager of Marketing and Communications, Dylan Lampe, tells KCII News how the BackPack Program could help kids with behavioral problems, “Folks from around the state really understand that it’s very important for our kids and our youth to have access to food because, as I mentioned, those behavioral problems. If those continue year after year, that cycle doesn’t go away and it follows them into adulthood and it affects every level of society. Everybody understands the importance of making sure our kids are taken care of and have access to food.” Lampe says over 140 schools have incorporated the BackPack Program, and over 100 school pantries have been created to help students and their families with food shortages. The Food Bank of Iowa works alongside communities and schools to identify the needs and determine if the BackPack Program or school pantry program would be necessary and possible.
