March has been designated as Problem Gambling Awareness Month in Iowa by Governor Kim Reynolds. According to the Iowa Department of Public Health, 315,000 Iowans experienced at least one problem related to gambling in the last year. Symptoms of problem gambling include feeling restless or irritable when trying to cut down or stop gambling, gambling to get relief from feeling depressed or anxious, needing to gamble with larger amounts of money or with larger bets in order to get the same feeling of excitement, and lying to family and friends in order to hide gambling activities. According to the IDPH, 13% of adult Iowans have experienced a problem related to their gambling. If you or someone you know has a gambling problem, call 1-800-BETS-OFF or go to yourlifeiow.org to find services near you.
