The calendar for the next school year has been proposed for the Washington Community School District. The calendar was reviewed by multiple committees and discussed at the recent school board meeting. Superintendent Willie Stone shared the state mandates that school cannot begin before August 23rd. Classes will officially start in Washington on Monday, August 24th. Stone explains why the first two days will be early dismissals, “We’re really trying to ease people into it just because that first week, especially for our younger students, if we go full days that first week there’s a high possibility that they may be napping Thursday and Friday, and not getting what we need to get out of education. We’re trying to make sure that we’re really cognizant of that. We realize that we’re trying to do the best thing that we can for our students educationally and just health-wise.”
Also, with the way the calendar falls spring break and Easter break will coincide with no school March 31st through April 5th. Stone says this is not a permanent change, but just fits with next year’s calendar. The end of the year is scheduled for May 21, 2021. The calendar will officially be considered for adoption at the next Washington School Board meeting.
