At a time when social distancing is recommended, there are still ways to support local businesses. Main Street Washington Director Sarah Grunewaldt says it’s important to shop locally year-round to support our communities. She says right now it may take a little creativity, “It’s important to shop local all the time, you know we’re in a really unique situation where we don’t want people coming within six feet of each other and when you’re a local business owner you’re standing a couple of feet from somebody when you’re taking their money to buy that new sweater, or get your watch fixed, or even to pay for that cup of coffee. And so these are people in our community that have opened their doors and donated time and money to local events and community fundraisers, and now that they’re basically seeing their profit line zero out. They are not seeing people come in their doors, they are not spending money, and they have bills to pay, they have families to feed. It’s just as important that we support them in this time maybe in more creative ways that we have in the past.” Many local businesses are now offering curbside service, and restaurants are offering carryout or delivery.
Grunewaldt adds that there are also websites or Facebook pages people can shop from home or purchase gift cards to use later, “I think the biggest thing is really just, if you’re uncertain about how you can help somebody, call and ask them. Picking up the phone and calling these businesses, they’re there. Send them an email. Ask how you can help. If you need something, if you need a birthday gift for someone, please call those stores and ask for help and guidance. A lot of them will help you and continue to support you as well.”
