All jury trials in Iowa have been postponed in an effort to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, and the Iowa Supreme Court is now allowing people to appear remotely by videoconference of telephone for many court procedures. The order was announced following Governor Kim Reynolds’ State of Public Health Emergency Declaration. All non-jury criminal trials have been moved back to April 20th and later, and all non-jury civic trials have been postponed to May 4th or later. District courts will continue to conduct in-person trials and hearings already in progress. Also, criminal and emergency cases that can’t be done by video or phone will be conducted in-person. Emergency matters could include protective orders, motions to quash garnishments, landlord tenant proceedings in which the tenant poses a clear and present danger, and proceeds for substance abuse treatment, hospitalization, child removal, elder abuse, and dependent adult. In addition, the speedy indictment deadline has been extended from 45 to 60 days.
