With the Iowa Legislative session stopped for 30 days due to the novel coronavirus outbreak, one Iowa Representative says his focus will shift once the session starts again. Representative Joe Mitchell tells KCII News how his priorities have changed since the session was postponed where at the start of the session there was a need to increase the workforce, “We came in this year with our priorities being child care, and workforce, and mental health. Well now, we probably don’t have a workforce problem anymore because people are getting laid off, business is going to be slower and the economy isn’t going to be doing as good as it was before the pandemic took with this virus. So we probably won’t have that problem with the workforce like we had before. With a skilled workforce, yes to some extent but overall, it won’t be as big of an issue. We probably have some people looking for jobs. Mental health and childcare that all goes on with what’s going on right now. So people lost jobs and people are looking for childcare because kids aren’t going to school any more. So those are still two big issues that we’re going to have to tackle when we come back to session.” The legislative session will be delayed until April 15th, due to recommendations from the CDC and Governor Reynolds limiting social gatherings to 10 people. Mitchell also says a stimulus package should be discussed as well to help businesses like casinos and hotels that were forced to shut down.
