Washington County Hospital and Clinics has issued a memo to area employers in response to requests for COVID-19 testing. According to the memo from WCHC CEO Todd Patterson, they have received many calls and requests for appointments from people saying they need COVID-19 testing or documentation stating they do not have the virus and are able to return to work. WCHC feels prepared, but does have a limited supply of testing kits to be used for COVID-19 screening.
Patterson encourages businesses to develop workplace protocols and recommends guidance from the Iowa Department of Public Health or Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to do so. The CDC recommends updated cleaning and disinfecting, social distancing, and encouraging employees who have symptoms like fever, cough, and shortness of breath to stay home.
Patterson adds that WCHC has instituted a pre-screening process to assess patients which includes questions on symptoms, recent travel, and contact with anyone who has tested positive for the upper respiratory virus. Following that, when appropriate an appointment will be scheduled at WCHC’s new respiratory triage clinic. Medical providers will assess patients and complete necessary testing, which may include tests for influenza A and B, strep, RSV, and if warranted COVID-19.
