Being away from students can be difficult for some teachers, that’s why one Mid-Prairie teacher went the extra mile to surprise her students. Second grade teacher Kerri Bell went around to each of her students’ houses and waved at them like they were at a parade. Bell says it took a total of four hours to complete the route she made to see all 19 students. Bell tells KCII News how she felt when she saw her students wave at her from the windows of their homes, “As I honked, the kids came to the window and it was heartwarming for me and just to see their faces light up. Some came outside and from a distance said a few words to me and were just overjoyed because they were like, ‘Is Mrs. Bell ok?’ and, ‘Is her family ok?’ Just like I want to make sure that they’re ok too.” The Mid-Prairie school district is also planning on doing a parade style event where teachers and staff visit students’ homes and wave to them. Bell recommends teachers send postcards to students and stay positive, and for parents to schedule their day to make these uncertain times seem normal at home.
