As the weather begins to warm up, various city projects are getting underway, including the Too Many Unknown Soldiers Project in Kalona. A granite monument currently sits at the cemetery in Kalona and the city will be repurposing it into a brand new monument to pay tribute to fallen soldiers. City Administrator Ryan Schalbaugh tells KCII News about the updates the monument will receive, “We are doing something similar to what we did for our veterans memorial. We’re going to go in and we’re going to lay a base of concrete and do some pavers on top of it. Re-etch and clean up the monument in Dubuque, that’s where it’s being done. We’re going to add some seeding, a flag pole that’s lit and some black granite pillars on the side with some cannonballs on top from the original monument. So we’re going to spruce up the old and bring in some new elements, and make it look more public friendly and a little more aesthetically pleasing than what it was previously.” Schlabaugh says with the current social distancing recommendations in place, the city council will wait a little longer to finalize plans. It is expected to be complete by Memorial Day. The city council used some Washington County Riverboat Foundation funds to pay for the project, which amounted to approximately $25,000.
