If school is able to resume on May 1st, the Iowa High School Athletic Association and the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union has released a plan for a shortened spring sports season.
The tentative schedule released on Monday allows teams to resume practice on Friday, May 1st with golf and track eligible to have regular season competitions starting on May 4th and soccer on May 8th. Track and Field would have a couple weeks of meets leading up to state qualifying on May 28th and state in Des Moines from June 4th-6th. Girls’ golf would start regionals on May 26th with state on June 8th and 9th while the boys have sectionals on May 29th and state on June 11th and 12th. The soccer playoffs bleed deep into the summer with the girls starting the postseason on June 4th and state from June 16th-20th. The boys start the playoffs June 8th and finish the year June 15th-19th.
IHSAA Communications Director Chris Cuellar talks about what all went into this plan. “After consulting with coaches, athletic directors, and the coaches associations we all determined that something is better than nothing. They understand the time crunch everyone is up against and we are fortunate that they are willing to be flexible with scheduling. May 1st is a tentative start for us, but these are the dates that made sense. Going deep into June will look different and be big changes, but we are hopeful that we can make them happen.”
As of now, this tentative schedule has not changed the start of the summer sports season. Stay tuned to KCII Sports for updates.
