Governor Kim Reynolds announced last week the extension of school closures until April 30th due to COVID-19, but this extension will not affect the Mid-Prairie School District’s continued food program. Since the original school closures in March, the Mid-Prairie School District has offered free prepackaged meals to over 300 students weekly and will continue to do so throughout April. Superintendent Mark Schneider tells KCII News where students can pick up meals throughout the week, “Our pickup spots open and our vans are there from 11:45 till 12:15 on Mondays and Wednesdays so the time is the same for any of the six pickup spots. We have two pick up spots in Kalona, one is at Kalona Mennonite Church and one is in the grass lot across from the chamber building which is located downtown. Those are Kalona’s pick up spots. In Wellman, pick up spots are the Baptist church south of Highway 22, and then north of 22 is the Wellman Mennonite Church at the parking lot. And then we also have a pick up spot out at our home school education center which is the former Washington Township Elementary building, which is north of both Kalona and Wellman. And then our last pick up spot is in West Chester at the Heritage Building which is the former West Chester School.” Children younger than 19 are able to receive these free meals. Schneider asks families who are not currently receiving meals to contact the central administrative office, Carmela Ulin, or Mark Schneider by this Thursday if they want to start receiving meals. Pre-packaged meals will include breakfast and lunch for each day of the week.
