Spring turkey season in Iowa is right around the corner. Hunters around Iowa are eager to get back to the great outdoors and so is Washington County Naturalist Megan Jorgensen. From a young age, Jorgensen has enjoyed this particular hunting season and she wants to educate hunters on the uniqueness of this season. During the fall turkey season, hunters can harvest one turkey, while during the spring season hunters are able to harvest two. Jorgensen tells KCII News the reason why the harvest limit is so low, “So, turkeys used to be extinct in Iowa. For the longest time since 1910 that was when we had the last known wild turkey and that was seen in Lucas County. So it wasn’t until the 1960s when they successfully reintroduced the species. Because of that, we don’t have a high number of turkeys in our state. I will argue too that since they have a woodland habitat, and our state has a lot of farm ground, that kind of limits where these turkeys can live since we don’t have as many woodlands.” Spring turkey season is split up into five different seasons. Jorgensen explains youth season will run from April 10-12, season one from April 13-16, season two from April 17-21, season three from April 22-28, and season four from April 29th to May 17th. Bows are allowed in all four seasons, but guns can be used for seasons one, two, or three. Hunters can use guns during season four to harvest a second bird if they choose. The Washington County Conservation warns hunters of areas that they manage where hunting is prohibited which includes: Brinton Timber, Foster Pond, Hayes Timber, Kewash Nature Trail, Marr Park, Statler Woods, and Walnut School.
