The Truman State Bulldog men’s basketball program had its most successful season in decades and a former area athlete was right in the middle of the excitement. Former WACO Warrior and Iowa State Cyclone Austin McBeth is on the coaching staff of the Bulldog men’s basketball team. Truman wrapped up a 23-8 overall record, including 16-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, taking home a share of their first regular season title since 1979. As the three seed in the conference tournament, the Bulldogs ran the table, winning the tournament championship 53-52 over Missouri-St. Louis on a three point shot with one minute remaining. The conference tournament title is the first for the Bulldogs since 1999. McBeth serves as an assistant on the Truman staff under former Iowa Hawkeye Jeff Horner. McBeth, a member of the Truman staff since 2018, graduated from Iowa State in 2013 and WACO High School in 2008. He has written a book called “The Gap Theory” which has been endorsed by current University of Nebraska and former Chicago Bulls head coach Fred Hoiberg.
