If a soccer season is able to happen this spring, the expectations will be high surrounding the up and coming Washington girls program.
After combining for one win from 2016-2018, the Demons busted onto the scene last year to start 5-1 and finished the 2019 campaign with an 8-9 record. Everyone returns from that squad and expect the offense to be led by the dangerous one-two punch of junior Trina Griffin and sophomore Greta Rothe. Griffin cashed in on 19 goals last spring that ranked second in the Southeast Conference and Rothe’s 13 as a freshman was sixth. Halle Leyden and Narely Torrijos provide senior experience, as Leyden chipped in with five goals last year and Torrijos is a key defender. Olivia Pacha returns in goal and looks to build on her conference best 216 saves in 2019.
First year head coach Steven Caulk is excited for his team’s potential and still sees a lot of room for growth. “I think one area where we can improve a lot is understanding our system of play. Everyone needs to know what to do at all times not only when they have the ball, but when they don’t have the ball as well. Players knowing what to do and where to go when they don’t have the ball is a key ingredient to a successful team.”
The current spring sports suspension due to COVID-19 runs through May 1st and the first soccer competition may take place May 8th.
