As school districts continue to provide alternative learning opportunities online for students due to COVID-19 school closures, the Mid-Prairie school district has a solution in place for those who do not have access to the internet from home. The district recently bought 40 wireless hotspots through US Cellular and T-Mobile to help students to work on their class work from home. Superintendent Mark Schneider says these hotspots can cost anywhere from $10 per month up to $40 per month depending on the family size and usage per household. Schneider tells KCII News this solution was best for the growing district, “We would really like it to be internet if at all possible. Of course we are also 1:1. Each of the students in fifth grade up to 12th grade have their own electronic device so they do have a device that they can take home with them. Then in kindergarten through fourth grade we are not technically 1:1 where each student has their own devices, but we have enough devices that especially for students with special needs that need certain apps or that they can use we can try to get them a device too. It’s going to be very individualized and we will look at each family and take their needs into consideration and try to do the very best that we can for every family.”  Hotspots were distributed to families last week. Schneider says they will continue to provide optional online learning opportunities for their students throughout the extended break.
