The Highland food program has seen an increase in the number of students they are serving and they are ready to continue providing food through the extended closure. Governor Kim Reynolds announced the extended closure of schools until April 30th due to COVID-19. Superintendent Ken Crawford tells KCII News how impressed he is with the program, “That’s been a great turnout. We’ve gone from over 190 meals the first Monday, then last Wednesday we were over 300 meals. We are thrilled people are taking advantage of that. The number of volunteers and the number of people helping out is just tremendous on that.” Crawford says the district will continue to provide meals for the duration of the extended closure.
Pick up locations are at the Ainsworth Ball Association concession stand and in Riverside at the elementary school parking lot. Meals can be picked up around noon on Mondays and Wednesdays. Monday meals contain three breakfasts and two lunches, and Wednesday meals contain two breakfasts and three lunches. These prepackaged meals contain a variety of food items, including grain, fruit, meat or meat alternatives, cold ready to eat meals, and heat and eat meals. Meals are on a first come, first serve basis and families must notify the school if they wish to start receiving meals.
