National Library Week was supposed to be celebrated at local libraries from April 19th-25th, but this year it will have to be celebrated at home. Governor Kim Reynolds announced in early April more COVID-19-related closures, which expanded the list to include libraries. Kalona Public Library co-director Olivia Kahler says it’s unfortunate the library was forced to shut its doors, but says national library week will still be celebrated. Kahler tells KCII News what the new theme of this year’s event will be, “The American Library Association theme for National Library Week was ‘Find your place at the library.’ However, when the pandemic hit, and libraries were forced to close, the theme was then changed to ‘Find the library at your place.’ Because all of the library resources that are online can be accessed easily from the comfort of your home with a library card number.” Kahler says even though their doors are closed, individuals and families can still email the library and receive a library card to access all the online resources, just in time for national library week. The Kalona Public Library is celebrating national library week with a picture book scavenger hunt, story times, and various craft projects for kids to complete.
