With the recent news of two Tyson Foods plant employees passing away due to COVID-19-related issues, Columbus Junction Mayor Mark Huston is working hard to provide normalcy during these times. Last week, over 140 employees at the Tyson Foods plant in Columbus Junction were confirmed to have contracted the virus. Huston says the Tyson plant employs an estimated 1,300 individuals who travel inside and outside the county, but he believes Tyson is doing everything to keep their employees safe and healthy. Huston tells KCII News how city hall has continued normal operations during the COVID-19 outbreak, “City Hall is locked. Our clerks are here working on the normal things. Our public works people are still taking care of water and sewer. So the city moves on. We just try to be as safe and careful as we can.” According to the Iowa Department of Public Health’s information from Sunday, Louisa County has 212 positive cases and two deaths.
