Since the recommended temporary closure of libraries due to COVID-19, Kalona Public Library Co-Director Olivia Kahler has been busy cleaning and making educational videos. With in-person events cancelled, Kahler wanted to continue serving the Kalona community with story times and various projects kids can complete at home. Kahler tells KCII News how the library staff has coped without their regular patrons at the library, “We’ve gotten a lot of projects done within the library which is awesome. We had the carpets cleaned, we had the light fixtures cleaned, we vacuumed, we had a bunch of dusting and window washing done. Then we redid a bunch of materials. I probably got rid of 200 CDs and put them in the book sale. Some of them haven’t been checked out since 1998. We did move some stuff around, we changed out some display shelves. We have some new changes, just little ones, but I think the patrons will notice and kind of enjoy a little bit of a face lift.” Kahler has been creating online videos and projects throughout the week in celebration of National Library Week. She also announced a celebration for former library director Anne Skaden will be held at a later date, once the spread of COVID-19 has been controlled.
