Last week, spring sport athletes and coaches received the devastating news that there would be no season amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The somewhat expected news from Governor Kim Reynolds still sent shockwaves across the state with this unprecedented cancellation. Highland Golf Coach Jacob Shultz tells KCII Sports his reaction to the news. “I was devastated to be honest. I was really excited for this year. We had a smaller team, but I was looking forward to that so I could spend a little extra time with each player. It is a really unfortunate situation.”

Senior boys’ soccer player at Mid-Prairie Ashten VanWinkle talked about what it was like losing his final prep season. “It was sad knowing I wouldn’t be able to play my senior season especially after missing part of last year with a broken collarbone. My team became my family after playing with them all of these years so it is really sad I won’t be able to have one final season with them. This situation shows that anything can happen and life is unpredictable. You just have to take it one step at a time.”

Currently the summer sports season is suspended and the status will be reevaluated before June.
