Nobody was injured in a fire at the Old Main building on Lexington Boulevard in Washington on Wednesday. According to the Washington County Communications Office, at 11:54 a.m. the fire in the upstairs of the building was reported to emergency officials. Washington Fire Department, Washington County Rescue, Washington County Sheriff’s personnel, Washington Police, and Alliant Energy responded to the scene. The fire was extinguished.
The Old Main building is part of HACAP and provides low-income apartments. RenElla Crawford with HACAP tells KCII News that there is damage to two apartments in the building. Two single moms lived in those apartments. They lost many of their belongings due to water damage from the sprinkler system helping to dampen the fire. Crawford is reaching out to area churches for assistance, as neither tenant had insurance and will need to replace many of their belongings. Those two tenants are relocating to other apartments within the building.
There’s also structural damage to the building. They’re working on getting quotes for the restoration, but those repairs will be covered by insurance.
