A program has been launched to connect food banks with pig farmers as there’s been a partial disruption in the food supply chain due to COVID-19. Outbreaks of the virus have been associated with those working in processing facilities. With many meat processing facilities on partial closures or operating at decreased rates, Governor Kim Reynolds, Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig, and the Iowa Pork Producers have started the Pass the Pork program. The program connects farmers who have hogs ready to be processed with food banks across the state to help get food to those who need it. Pig farmers or meat processors interested in participating should call the Iowa Pork Producers Association at (515) 225-7675.
In addition, Iowans can contribute to the Iowa Food Bank Association to help cover the cost of processing, storing, and delivering this pork. A $25 donation will help provide 50 servings of pork – click here.
