The Kalona City Council approved the start of construction work on North 14th Street at Monday’s meeting. The city worked on this road six years ago and has continued yearly patching work, but due to high volumes of traffic, reshaping must be done. City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh says the work will be done by LL Pelling Company for a total of $17,177. This project will close out the Road Use Funds for the city for the rest of the year, but Schlabaugh believes this will put the city in a better position for road projects next fiscal year, “With less travel means less people which means less road tax. Which means we don’t know where we are going to fall in the whole scheme of things. Usually I’m on my soap box saying, ‘Let’s go. Let’s do it right away because we can get favorable bids.’ I’m probably more inclined to say let’s pick and choose a few, let’s knock them off and then let’s see what the year does and maybe do more in 2021 this next fiscal year and not necessarily right away.” The North 14th Street project will fix around 4,510 square yards of road and is set to begin later this month.
