Plans are underway to hold summer reading in a different format in Washington due to COVID-19 guidelines. People are encouraged to register their children and help get them reading this summer. Librarian Jenisa Harris with the Washington Free Public Library shares what this year’s theme will be, “We are doing ‘Get Fired Up for Summer Learning at Your Library,’ and it’s a fairytale theme. So you’ll see some of our bags will be themed that way, so it’s a lot of fun. And keep a lookout for some fun artwork on the library’s front window.” She says the program will include online sessions as well as make and take craft bags and Bingo cards.

She adds that it’s important for children to keep reading when they’re away from school, “Children can lose up to a reading level just during the summer, especially this summer it’s so important with school not being in session for COVID-19. I know parents are doing the best they can to keep their kids learning and growing, and it’s just hard to keep them entertained. So, we want to partner with those parents and guardians and say here’s some fun ways we can help you keep that reading going this summer.”

People can register by calling the library at 653-2726 or send Harris an email at jenisa.harris@washington.lib.ia.us. Emails need to include the child’s name, the parent’s name, and the grade level the child completed this year. Registration is due by May 30th.
