A new scam call has surfaced in Louisa County. The Wapello Police Department has received reports of elderly individuals receiving calls from someone claiming to be from the Publisher’s Clearing House and saying they have won some money, and only need to pay the taxes to claim the award money. Scam callers have created fake names such as Alex, Frank, and William and they ask for cash payments over the phone. The Iowa Department of Justice says a scam caller will pressure an individual to provide personal information, like financial information or a social security number, or will claim an individual must pay a government agency or utility service immediately. The Wapello Police Department asks individuals who receive these calls to report any phone numbers, names, and addresses to the police department. Do not give personal information out over the phone.
