The number one sports story for Washington from the 2019-2020 academic year in our top 10 countdown goes down as an all-time classic on the gridiron at Case Field.

On October 25th the Demon football team hosted Mount Pleasant for week nine action with a class 3A playoff bid on the line for both teams. Two evenly matched squads with the stakes high meant fans were in for a treat, but no one was expecting to witness the craziness that transpired that night. The game of the year featured over 1,100 yards of total offense and a final score that resembled a well-contested basketball game with the Demons upending the Panthers 64-61. Both teams scored within the first few minutes and the slugfest was on with Washington holding a slight 36-28 advantage at the break. Fast forward to under two minutes to play and the Panthers put the pressure on after a score that put them up 61-57 with 1:34 to play. That amount of time was all quarterback Luke Turner and company needed, as they marched right down the field and reached pay dirt with just 12 seconds left and the party at Case Field was on.

Head Coach James Harris told KCII Sports he had full confidence in his offense in that final drive. “I know how well-coached they are so I wasn’t worried about it. I watched our offense dominate all day. It was going to be the last team that had the ball would win and that’s what it came down to.”

Turner and the offensive line were unstoppable, as the senior tallied 347 yards on the ground with four scores and added two more through the air. Spencer Sotelo broke out for two receiving touchdowns and an 80-yard kickoff return to the house early in the second half.

The victory propelled the Demons to the postseason where they fell to Western Dubuque in the first round to finish the year 7-3. To check out our entire top 10 Demon countdown find the stories online at kciiradio.com.
