Law enforcement officers were celebrated this week during National Police Week. Since 1962, with the initial creation of Peace Officer Memorial Day on May 15th, this celebratory week has paid homage to the men and women who protect their communities. Washington County Sheriff Jared Schneider has been part of law enforcement in Washington County since 1995, and is appreciative of the opportunity to serve its citizens. He tells KCII News how people can celebrate National Police Week even after it’s done, “If you know an officer personally or you come across an officer during this week, to be thinking about them and thanking them for what they do. It probably doesn’t hurt to do that throughout the year. There’s a lot of weeks throughout the year set aside for the different professions and it’s one of those things that no matter who you are or what you do if there’s a thank you coming, we should probably do that. We shouldn’t wait for that one week out of the year.” Schneider says Washington County has been lucky to only have had one incident where two officers perished doing their job. This occurred in 1930 when Sheriff William Sweet and City Marshal Aaron Bailey were shot and killed at the courthouse after arresting a man for stealing a car. Schneider is appreciative of those officers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.
