The third best sports story in our top 10 countdown for area schools from the 2019-2020 academic year takes us to the cross country course when Southeast Iowa runners punched their ticket to the state meet.

At the state qualifying meet on October 24th in Iowa City, Highland’s Madison Thomann easily cracked the top 15 in class 1A by placing seventh out of 111 in 21:20. In the boys’ race it was a nail biter for Winfield-Mt. Union’s Brody Barton and WACO’s Jonah Egli, as they just snuck in with a 14th and 15th place finish with times of 18:06 and 18:08, respectively. Sigourney competed in a state qualifier at Marshalltown and Mason Moore saw his season continue after placing 13th in 17:44. At the state meet in Fort Dodge the next week, Thomann placed 63rd (21:21), Barton 60th (17:52), Moore 75th (18:00), and Egli 92nd (18:15).

Check back in tomorrow for number two on our countdown when we take a look at area state wrestlers.
