We have reached the second best sports story in our top 10 countdown for area schools from the 2019-2020 academic year and it takes us to the wrestling mat when Southeast Iowa grapplers competed in the state tournament.
Two wrestlers finished a long weekend at Wells Fargo Arena on the podium with Columbus Community/WMU’s Lane Scorpil finishing sixth in class 2A at 106 lbs and Sigourney’s Mason Dye placed seventh at 126 lbs in class 1A. Both wrestlers won their opening match on Thursday and split a pair of matches on Friday to advance to championship Saturday and secure a medal finish.
Dye told KCII Sports what it was like to cap off his career on the biggest stage. “Ending my career with a win was important to me and I was happy I was able to do that. Getting prepared for the tournament was different knowing this was my last go around, but it was a really good time. I didn’t finish how I wanted, but being on the podium is a great accomplishment.”
Individuals that advanced to the second day of the tournament included Highland’s Bryce Thompson at 106 lbs, WACO’s Jalen Collins at 132 lbs, WACO’s Jaden Williams at 152 lbs, and Sigourney’s Jack Clarahan at 152 lbs. WACO’s Jonah Clark at 145 lbs and Highland’s Cael Yeggy at 182 lbs also competed in Des Moines after cracking the top two at their district meet.
The top 10 countdown hits the peak tomorrow with the number one sports story when we take a look at a remarkable WACO basketball season.
