The new Washington YMCA will open its doors at 5 a.m. Monday. The new facility boasts an indoor walking track, a dedicated spin room, cardio and strength rooms, and a full-size basketball court to allow more room for programming and games.
Washington YMCA CEO Amy Schulte says the new facility will have a nod to the past and shares what the process has been like to move, “A lot of going through a lot of really neat, historical items from the past 96 years of the YMCA being downtown. We found some really neat items that we’re going to incorporate into the new building. And having some pictures and some different documents, and those types of things that’ll be framed and put into our lobby. So, it’s been bittersweet to leave that facility but it’s also been really nice to have a new beginning and lots of new opportunities in our new building, as well.”
The original YMCA building will remain open for use of the indoor pool which allows two swimmers at a time due to COVID-19 restrictions. The Y on the square is closed, and the YMCA had been renting the space from a landlord.
Small group tours are available of the new building on the corner of West 5th Street and North D Avenue. To set up a tour, call the YMCA.
