With current social distancing measures in place, the Louisa County Conservation Board has cancelled their summer programs and camps. As of 11 a.m. Friday, the Iowa Department of Public Health reported 341 positive COVID-19 cases and 10 deaths in Louisa County. Naturalist Lana McComb (Lay-na, Mick-Comb) was saddened by the decision, but she knew why it had to be done, “When we started talking about summer camps, we knew that Louisa County had unfortunately become quite a hot spot for COVID-19 with the outbreaks at Tyson and in the nursing homes. So we knew that we really needed to do everything that we could to keep our community safe.” While no in-person events will take place this summer, the conservation board will host non-contact scavenger hunt hikes and geocaching puzzle adventures around their parks and recreational areas. McComb hopes when the fall comes around, their monarch tagging program will be able to be held, even if social distancing has to be enforced.
