Eastern Iowa has a threat of heavy rain Tuesday due to Tropical Storm Cristobal. The National Weather Service says that the tropical storm in the Gulf of Mexico may result in heavy rain locally and windy conditions Wednesday. One to three inches of rain may be dumped on eastern Iowa starting in the early afternoon Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service, the devastating Galveston hurricane of 1900 that claimed 8,000 lives is the only time a storm classified as tropical in nature passed over Iowa. Days after the hurricane made landfall in eastern Texas, the center of the low pressure system is estimated to have passed over the area near Williamsburg and Iowa City. At that point it was strong enough to be a tropical depression. The storm then strengthened over land and caused damage in the Great Lakes region.
