As Iowa’s legislative session continues to focus on Iowa’s budget, one local state senator wants to see more focus on COVID-19 testing availability in southeast Iowa. Senator Rich Taylor says he has received hundreds of emails everyday during the COVID-19 pandemic, and one issue that continues to be brought up is a lack of COVID-19 testing availability in Henry and Lee counties. While Taylor agrees with the reopening process the state is implementing, he wants increased COVID-19 testing availability, “One thing that we should focus on is more testing, more availability of testing. I don’t know how it is in Washington County, but I do know down here in Henry County and in Lee County, the only way you can get a test is if you’re getting ready to go to the hospital. Otherwise there’s just not the availability. But I think that’s something we need to focus on to make sure that, like the president says and the governor says, if you want to test you can get it. That’s just not true down here where I’m at.” As of Sunday at 12 p.m., Henry County has had 974 people tested for COVID-19 and 74 were positive, and Lee County has had 878 people tested and 31 were positive. Henry County has had 2 deaths from COVID-19 and Lee County has had no deaths.
