The City of Wellman is looking to appoint a new council member. Councilmember Mark Philpot announced in May he was resigning from his position effective July 1. Mayor Ryan Miller told the council either a special election could occur, costing the city about $1,000, or an appointment could be made to replace the vacant seat. The council believed voters would be in favor of not spending money and decided to appoint someone. In order for a special election to occur, voters would have to submit a petition signed by at least 15% of the voters who cast ballots in the last city election. Philpot has been part of the Wellman City Council since 2018.
