As Iowa’s waters are being filled with more people enjoying summer swimming, fishing, and boating, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources urges boaters to use caution. In the first 10 days of June, Iowa DNR conservation officers responded to drownings across the state that resulted in five fatalities. All of those individuals were not wearing life jackets. In order to prevent drowning deaths and other injuries, the DNR has outlined some safety tips before and after going out on the waters. They recommend everyone, not just children, use life jackets. While life jackets are required for children ages 12 and under to wear, the DNR believes life jackets are essential to use for all ages to prevent tragedies. Before heading out on the waters, make sure your boat has a charged fire extinguisher for boats with motors, has a functioning horn or whistle, and life jackets can be easily accessible. A designated operator is recommended for any individuals consuming alcohol on a boat. The same rules apply on a boat as they do in a car, a blood alcohol concentration level of 0.8 is the limit while operating. The DNR encourages Iowans to have fun this summer, but use caution and be safe.
