Food directly from producers and onto the kitchen tables of local residents is the goal of a program offered at the Washington Farmers’ Market. Main Street Washington Director Sarah Grunewaldt explains the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program provides vouchers for free produce for seniors over the age of 60 who meet income guidelines, “So the goal of the program is really to get fresh produce from farmers’ markets or roadside stands in the hands of income-limited people so that they have some really vitamin-rich food.”
The program is congressionally authorized. These coupons can be used for fresh produce at farmers markets and roadside stands. Each qualifying individual is eligible for $30 worth of checks to be used with certified vendors at the market. To sign up for the program, contact the CHOICES drop-in center in downtown Washington.
